Firestone Building Products has chosen its Bristol, CT manufacturing facility for a demonstration of its PlatinumPV™ concept. PlatinumPV matches life cycles of the roofing system and PV (photovoltaic) array so that building owners can capture 30+ years of renewable energy production uninterrupted by the need for roof system maintenance or replacement.
The Platinum roofing system consists of fully adhered, .090 EcoWhite™ EPDM Platinum™ membrane over ½” high density ISOGARD™ HD Cover Board and a thermal layer of ISO 95+™ polyiso insulation. Covered by Firestone Building Products 30-year Red Shield™ Platinum™ Warranty, this roofing system coverage protects not only against leaks, but also incidental punctures, up to two inches of hail damage and winds up to 100 miles per hour. Firestone QuickSeam™ Yellow Safety Strip is used to identify safe boundaries for the roof edge and PV systems.
The PV solar array was designed by Firestone to compare the performance of traditional crystalline silicon panels versus newer technologies found in flexible thin film modules. To that end, each section is rated at the same 30kW DC gross output and wired to its own inverter. You can observe the live performance of each system on the lobby monitor by clicking on “Graph” and then “Power by 30kW System”. The panels, one section with 240W polycrystalline modules in an aerodynamic injection-molded plastic ballasted rack and the second, 265W monocrystalline panels in an aluminum frame ballasted rack, are tilted 10 degrees. The flexible thin films, one of amorphous silicon design and one of CIGS (copper, indium, gallium, selenide) are directly bonded to the thermoset EPDM membrane utilizing Firestone’s low VOC Single Ply Primer. The PV systems were commissioned on June 11, 2013.
