Located in Columbus, Ga., John P. Thayer YMCA offers youth sports, aquatics and adult programs as well as a before and after school program, summer camps and more. The new $11 million facility contains a combined 43,000 square feet of multiple Firestone roofing and wall panel systems.
Specified by the architect due to the proven performance of Firestone products and single source warranty coverage, the John P. Thayer YMCA features an 8,000-square-foot 24-gauge Firestone UNA-CLAD UC-14 standing seam metal roofing system in terra cotta on the climbing wall and charcoal gray on the indoor swimming pool. The buildings facade features 4,000 square feet of Firestone Series 1200 composite metal wall panels in oyster white on the administrative building and indoor pool, and pewter on the main building and gym. On the low-slope roofing areas, 31,000 square feet of cold-applied Firestone SBS modified bitumen roofing system and 300 square feet of 90-mil Firestone RubberGard EPDM roofing system were installed. The contractor also used Firestone Tapered ISO 95+ GL polyiso insulation, Firestone Multi-Purpose MB Cold Adhesive and DensDeck Prime when installing the systems.
The installation was completed in three phases the gym, pool and exercise area with each phase individually measured and engineered by six roofing professionals over a total of eight months. While the humidity associated with the indoor pool presented some challenges, it was engineered for dew point conditions. Despite this, the building showcases a unique blend of multiple panels and colors and is FM/UL-certified.
The roof is protected by a Firestone Red Shield 20-year Warranty.
